Weekly Vibe: Full moon lunatics or natural sensitives

Welcome to all new and returning readers,

I’m so pleased to be together with you today, especially under the light of this evening’s Pink Full Moon. I like to use its energy to give my castings a natural boost, and tonight I’ll be having a magical bath, doing a bit of moon bathing, and perhaps lighting the fire pit, weather permitting of course! The UK’s weather is always a little unpredictable,  we’ve gone from heatwave to April showers in a matter of days, but I can’t complain. I was out walking my familiar in the woods last night and returned home just before eight, still with a trace of daylight.

We’re now in the six months of light here, and I absolutely love it. This is a beautiful evening to try the simple love spell below, love and connection nourish our souls on every level.

An Introduction to Candle Magick

Photo: Candle Magick

Candle magick is one of the most accessible and beautiful forms of spellwork within the craft, drawing upon the transformative and purifying energy of the element of fire. As hedge witches, we work closely with nature, spirit, and the unseen threads that weave our world together. Fire is the spark of life and will, it represents action, energy, desire, and transformation. When we light a candle with clear intention, we are literally igniting our magick into motion.

And I use lighting a candle as a signal that I'm open to spirit, literally I use the flame to open my doorway to beyond the veil. Lighting a candle when I want to connect with spirit or divine is as natural as opening the fridge when I’m hungry. I have candles for cleaning, candles for connection, candles for readings, cooking and celebrations, as well as for my specific spell work

Unlike more elaborate forms of ceremonial magick, candle spells can be as simple or as layered as you like. A candle, when paired with focus, herbs, intention, and breath, becomes a powerful conduit for change. Whether placed in a circle, a window, or beside your cup of tea, candle magick brings light to your intentions, quite literally illuminating the path forward.

Candle Colours and Their Meanings

Each candle colour carries its own energetic frequency. Choosing the right colour helps align your spellwork with the desired manefestation:

White or Natural Wax: Connection to source, spirit, and purity. These are wonderful for clarity, divine connection, healing, or when you're unsure which colour to use. White can stand in for any other colour.

Red: Passion, vitality, courage, and romantic love. Excellent for fire-based spells involving lust, action, or self-empowerment.

Pink: Love, self-care, emotional healing, friendship, and gentle connection. Use for drawing in compassion, heart-opening, and romance rooted in trust.

Green: Abundance, fertility, growth, and physical wellbeing. Also ideal for garden and herbal magick.

Black: Protection, banishing, and grounding. Use with care and clear intent to absorb negativity or end harmful cycles.

Blue: Calm, communication, intuition, and emotional clarity. Wonderful for dream work or soothing the nervous system.

Yellow: Confidence, learning, creativity, and solar energy. Bring this in when you want to spark joy or improve your mindset.

Purple: Spiritual insight, psychic abilities, and connection to mystery. Perfect for divination and deep inner work.

Orange: Energy, ambition, attraction, and opportunities. A great colour for manifesting movement and momentum.

You can anoint your candle with oils, roll it in herbs, or carve symbols into the wax. Let the candle be a reflection of your energy, there’s no one right way

A Simple Love & Connection Spell

To invite more love, warmth, and connection into your life

Ingredients:

  • 1 pink candle (or white if that’s what you have)

  • A small piece of rose quartz (optional, for heart energy)

  • A drop of rose oil or lavender oil (if you have it)

  • A quiet space and a calm heart

Steps:

  1. Light your candle with intention, saying softly:
â€śI welcome love into my life — freely given, gently held, joyfully received.”

  2. Anoint the candle or your hands with the oil. Hold the rose quartz or place it beside the candle.

  3. Close your eyes and visualise yourself surrounded by soft, glowing pink light. See yourself smiling, your heart open, your energy gently attracting loving, kind connections.

  4. Repeat the affirmation three times:
â€śLove flows to me and through me quickly and easily in numerous ways. I am ready, I am open, I am loved.”

  5. Let the candle burn safely until the wax has melted down (or snuff it and relight across three evenings). Bury the leftover wax or pour it into the earth as an offering of gratitude.

(This has been written especially for Andrew in Watertown MA, with immense love of course)

Perhaps the most important element of all candle spells, and of hedge witchcraft in general, is intuition. Trust your inner knowing. Your practice doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s. If you feel called to use a colour differently, or if you’re drawn to a candle simply because it “feels right,” that is magick speaking to you. A good example of this is if you want to connect with spirit and you know what their favorite colour in life was, use their colour in candle to connect with them.

The more we can own our craft, making it personal, intuitive, and heart-led, the more potent it becomes. You don’t need anyone’s permission to practise your magick your way. The flame responds to your energy. Speak to it like an old friend. Whisper your hopes. Let it hold your power.

May your candles burn bright, and your spells bloom with warmth, clarity, and wild wonder.

Dear Joy: Your Personal Questions Answered

- Dear Joy

Question:

Does the full moon keep you awake? How do you deal with it?
I have always had difficulty sleeping in general and my insomnia has gotten really bad the past few years. I’m very familiar with sleep aids and sleepy time teas and good sleep hygiene. I have a prescription sleep aid for insomnia that I take every night, and I’ve even begun praying to Hypnos and making an altar with offerings for him.

None of that seems to matter at all when it comes to the days leading up to the full moon. I am always wide awake, wired, and restless, well past the last vestiges of dawn whenever there is a full moon.

Can anyone else share their experience with this and what you do to combat it?

From Wahlburgerz on Reddit

My Response:

Dear Wahlburgerz,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I really hope you receive some supportive insights from the community to help make things feel a little easier. First of all, a big virtual hug from me! Sleep is vital, and I know how hard things can feel when you're not getting the rest your body and spirit need.

I’m really glad to hear you’re exploring different practices, from sleep hygiene to spiritual support with Hypnos, and staying open to new approaches. Personally, I’ve found some sleep aids can bring on odd, vivid dreams, so it may be worth speaking with your doctor to explore alternatives if your current one isn’t quite right.

You’re absolutely not alone, the full moon does impact many of us, especially those who are more energetically sensitive. The word lunatic does indeed come from luna, Latin for moon, and tales of noisy nights near asylums on full moons weren’t just superstition!

Rather than trying to fight the energy, I often suggest riding the wave. The full moon is potent, a time of heightened energy, so try leaning into it. You might use it for casting, journalling, moon bathing, or treating the night as sacred time for yourself. Grounding practices like visualising roots going deep into the Earth can also help settle the nervous system.

Personally, I love listening to the free guided sleep and hypnosis tracks by The Mindful Movement on YouTube, they’ve helped me drift off many times when nothing else would.

I'd love to hear what you find helpful too. In my book, you’re blessed to be so attuned to nature’s rhythms, but as with all powerful energies, there are two sides to navigate. You’re doing beautifully.

Blessings,
Joy x
