Hello, and Happy Imbloc!

Hello there,

Thank you for joining me this weekā€”itā€™s wonderful to touch base and hear how much you enjoy our time together. I hope you took some cleansing ideas from last weekend with you, and that, like me, you now feel better placed for the year ahead. Earlier in the week, I felt as though I was caught in a brutal storm; everything seemed upside down and empty. Little did I know that this turmoil was merely the precursor to calmā€”a necessary clearing out of the old, much like one of my readers in this weekā€™s Dear Joy article. Although uncomfortable, this process is essential to allow something new and more aligned to enter our lives.

I continue to be surprised by how deeply my passion for nature affects meā€”an irony, perhaps, coming from a hedge witch. My exploration of the energy of our native birch trees has been both palpable and invigorating, charging me with the courage to break new ground. This renewed energy is reflected in my readings, and I am excited to share this passion project as it unfolds.

Exploring the Tree Ogham: The Birch

Photo: The TREE OGHAM by GLENNIE KINDRED

This month, I am delighted to explore the ancient Tree Ogham (pronounced "Oh-am"). The Ogham is a Celtic system that uses 20 native trees from the UK, each marked with a distinct symbol, to form a sacred code. I am developing a divination method similar to Tarot or Runes, with the aim of eventually offering Ogham readings for you. Each month, I will focus on one tree, listen to its wisdom, and seek its permission to remove a small twig ā€“ about as wide as my little finger and as long as my middle finger ā€“ which, once dried, I will carve with its unique symbol. This process allows me to connect deeply with the treeā€™s energy and share its insights with you.

This month, my focus is on Birch. I will finish what Glennie Kindred started above, ā€œThe Birch is the first tree to colonise new ground, shedding its leaves and twigs to enrich the soil for other trees to follow.ā€ In the UK, two native birch species exist: Silver Birch and Downy Birch, with Downy Birch more common in the Scottish Highlands, often hybridising with Silver Birch. These trees can grow up to 30 metres tall, have diamond-shaped leaves that turn yellow in autumn, and feature distinctive bark that transitions from golden brown to silvery white. Their delicate catkin flowers, known locally as ā€˜lambā€™s tailsā€™, bloom from April to May, and a birch provides habitat for over 300 insect species.

Initially, the bare winter landscape made it difficult to spot birch trees, but a recent visit to a nearby valley revealed a stunning display of Silver Birch and wild birch hedging. The energy of the birch resonates with transformationā€”it is akin to the Death and Hanged Man cards in Tarot, urging us to shed what no longer serves us and embrace new beginnings. I feel its power guiding me to release unhelpful influences, much like the birch sheds its bark, pausing and paving the way for renewal.

Working with birch has taught me the importance of true self-care, the kind that nourishes the soul rather than merely offering surface fixes. It calls on us to connect with nature, cleanse our inner spaces, and let go of old patterns to make way for growth. I am continually inspired by Glennie Kindredā€™s work, which has taught me to commune with the trees and rewild my spirit. Credit is due where it is deservedā€”her teachings have been instrumental in shaping my practice.

Dear Joy: Your Personal Questions Answered

On my Etsy shop JoyWellnessWitch my practice is open to the whole world. I'm very grateful to the openness and connection I have with my clients. Each week I'll be sharing someone's energetic queries and my intuitive advice.

- Dear Joy

Question:

Iā€™m feeling really torn between moving my life forward and being there for one of my oldest friends. Although I know a true friend wants the best for me, I still feel compelled to support themā€”even when Iā€™m busyā€”and I end up feeling guilty. The other day, I spent three hours listening to them when I wasnā€™t well enough to go out; they said they felt disempowered, and rather than saying ā€˜never againā€™, I felt as though I had somehow failed. I received 25 and 23 long video messages on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, and while I responded thoughtfully to each, it left me too drained to work on a project Iā€™d planned. Iā€™m recovering from a poor health episode, and by Tuesday tea time, I was so overwhelmed, in tears and needed my support person to come over, which doesn't happen so much now. I was struggling so much myself. Because I didnā€™t complete my work on Monday and Tuesday, I had to spend my weekend redoing it. For context, I live with two chronic health conditions and a learning difficulty, and Iā€™m very proactive in managing my wellness. After over seven years of struggling, I long to return to work to have a fuller life and improve my familyā€™s finances. I also find non-face-to-face communication challenging, and although this friend is one of my oldest and dearest, I feel both torn and guilty.

My Response:

Dear Molly,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. I can certainly perform a protection ceremony for you, and Iā€™d like to offer some practical suggestions alongside to maximise your intentions. The fact that this is one of your oldest friends makes it particularly challenging to reset boundariesā€”itā€™s like redrawing family boundaries, with deeply embedded patterns on both sides. Since you struggle with indirect communication and value your own space, I encourage you to create a daily or weekly oasis for yourself, and perhaps invite your friend to share that space at a set pace rather than responding immediately to every message.

Iā€™m sending you a big virtual hug. You have a lot on your plate, yet youā€™re doing well by starting a new project to improve your life and support your family. Many in our sensitive community will resonate with your experience. I suspect that past abusive relationships may have contributed to your stress; please remember that this is merely an observation, not a judgementā€”it was never your fault. As an overgiver, you often find that others take advantage of your kindness, but now is an opportunity for growth and introspection. You are responsible for and able to set boundaries to keep yourself well and to thrive.

I recommend giving yourself ten minutes at the start of each week to observe your feelings about upcoming engagements. Notice whether you feel excitement or overwhelm after interactions, at first observe, then start acting on those feelings. Start small, this will take practice and be prepared for some pushback from those accustomed to your constant availability. Though this may feel awkward or even lonely at first, your aligned self is calling you to reclaim your space. When you feel guilty I'd encourage you to revisit your intentions for strength. You will be amazed at what unfolds when your higher good is at the centre of your decisions. May your truth return to you threefold. Blessings, Joy x by JoyWellnesSwitch

Thank you for joining me this week. Next week, Iā€™m excited to introduce Lavenderā€”a native herbal healer from the UK and across Europeā€”and share some magick that you can incorporate into your everyday self-care. I recently heard from Lottie, who is at the start of a new relationship that she hopes will grow into something meaningful; we will hear her concerns, prepare for the worst, and hope for the best alongside her.

Over the past week, I have noticed branches that were bare to the eye beginning to bud. These visible messages from Mother Earth serve as a gentle reminder of the promise of new beginnings and all the good yet to come.
