Hello, and Happy Imbloc!

Hello there,

I hope you enjoyed your Imbolc celebration, however you chose to mark it, and welcome to spring! I’ve already begun my countdown to the Spring Equinox – just five weeks to go – following what has felt like a long, dark winter here in the UK, both in reduced daylight and in the challenging days of my soul last season. I now welcome the balance of day and night that the Equinox brings, along with the extra four hours of light.

Last week’s New Moon truly exhausted me, but it also provided an opportunity to focus on small, daily rituals that bring light into our lives and uplift our energy. As sensitives, we often tend to care more for others than for ourselves, yet we can only give what we have. I hope you find something in this week’s newsletter that adds a spark of extra joy during this season of renewal.

Hagstones & Elemental Magick with Water

This week, I’m excited to share insights on hagstones and the use of water in Elemental Magick. Most exciting of all, I’ll introduce a simple daily practice that helps keep my energy elevated.

Photo: A hagstone found near Lohme, Germany, in the Baltic Sea. By Ansgar Koreng.

Celtic legend speaks of hagstones—also known as holey stones or witch stones—which are naturally formed stones with a hole, usually found near the sea or other bodies of water. They are revered as powerful protective talismans that, when worn or carried, guard the bearer against curses, hexes, negative spirits, and harm. Hagstones have also been used to ward off nightmares when strung on a bedpost, placed under pillows, or made into mobiles. It is believed that peering through the hole of a hagstone can reveal the Fae or Wee Folk and other otherworldly entities—though a word of caution: be careful what you wish for, as some visions cannot be unsee. If a hagstone breaks, it is thought to have expended its power to protect a life. I also cherish the power of hag shells; as with all things, the magic is strongest when found naturally, and sometimes, they may find you!

Be aware that gifting a hagstone or shell as a necklace or charm creates Elemental Magick that draws the wearer back to the place where it was found. When such an object is found in a place you love and given to someone you cherish, it can act as a love spell.

I love taking walks by the sea—it is both humbling and powerful. I often use running water to “wash my worries away.” Sometimes, if I need to let go of something, I write it down, tear the paper up, and place it in a stream rather than burning or burying it; there is solace in knowing that even the smallest worry will eventually be carried away by the vast sea.

Water itself is a potent energetic force, acting like a magnet. I use a glass of water by my bedside (not for drinking) to absorb negative energy—especially effective against the evil eye or jealousy. Overnight, the water acts like a super sponge, drawing out any lingering negativity. In the morning, I dispose of the water using my “energy out” hand (left if right-handed, and vice versa). After a brief pause, I fill my glass from the tap three times and pour it down the toilet, all while silently chanting, “Thrice leave me, thrice leave me, negativity, thrice leave me.” I then finish by drinking a fresh glass of wate, poured with my energy in hand, with the mantra, “I’m grateful; fresh energy flows quickly and easily into me.”

May this practice bring you renewal and positive change.

Dear Joy: Your Personal Questions Answered

On my Etsy shop JoyWellnessWitch my practice is open to the whole world. I'm very grateful to the openness and connection I have with my clients. Each week I'll be sharing someone's energetic queries and my intuitive advice.

- Dear Joy

Question:

Dear Joy I’m feeling really off colour and out of sorts, since New Years I just cant seem to get my mojo back. Please advise, thank you, you have been so helpful in the past.

- Molly Norfolk UK

My Response:

Dear Molly,

Thank you for reaching out once again. First, please accept a big virtual hug from me. It is entirely natural to feel a bit off-colour and out of sorts after the Winter Solstice celebrations and Christmas—especially with last week’s New Moon reminding us all that we need a moment to rest. Life has its ebbs and flows, and sometimes we simply need to rejuvenate.

I recently shared a cleansing, grounding, and protecting visualisation free on YouTube that you might find beneficial, and I can offer you a cleansing and protecting spell if you’d like. As we’ve discussed the Magick of Hag Stones today I’m drawn to recommend incorporating a personal amulet or talisman into your daily routine—an object that reminds you of people or places you love and cherished moments you’ve experienced. For example, I keep a shell on my keyring, a gift from my daughter, and a protective charm from the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, UK, which is very dear to me. I also display my son’s graduation photograph in my workspace and light my altar regularly to raise my vibe.

Talismans and amulets are very personal; while I have decades of experience to draw upon, even if you are younger, Hedge Magick is all around us—every drop of water, every leaf, stone, and feather carries energy. As we serve life, life serves us. I hope you find an object that resonates with you and reminds you of your own magick and power on this path.

Blessings,
